Video: Taking fishing to the next level in Costa Rica
For someone so young, Tosh Talbot is setting the billfish fishing bar very high
Weekly Fishing Blog By FECOP Staff
As most anglers know, when traveling to another country one of the first things you should do is see what the locals are doing. How they fish, where they fish, when they fish…what bait are they using and why. This can save a literal lifetime of frustration. One of the oldest local fishing techniques in Costa Rica is the art of handline fishing. Just about any coastal town you visit in Costa Rica will have it’s share of (usually older) fisherman with a spool of fishing line in one hand with the baited hook swirling overhead (in the other) like a cowboy with a lasso ready to rope a bronco.
Growing Up In The Land of Pura Vida
Meet Tosh Tolbot. Born in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula to Cara and Corey Craig he has spent a dreamlike childhood on the Osa Peninsula, one of the most biologically intense places in the world both on the land and in the ocean. Splitting time between Costa Rica and Canada where his father guided for years at a world class Canadian fishing lodge, Tosh developed an amazing, ESPN documentary worthy, set of skills and hobbies born from the confluence of experiences in Canada and Costa Rica (Including football, surfing and sport fishing). Learning from his dad (Owner and operator of Tropic Fins Sport Fishing in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula), Tosh has spent a lot of his childhood fishing and surrounded by anglers. These days you can find Tosh one of two places when he is at home in Costa Rica, on a boat fishing or shredding waves around Puerto Jimenez. He consistently places in the top three of surfing competitions around the country – but since this is a fishing blog – Lets get to the fishing.

Being a Costa Rican citizen by birth it is only fitting that Tosh has not only taken up the iconic art of hand-line fishing – but he has taken this angling technique to a whole new level. As he says in the following video – “It has always been a goal of mine to catch a sailfish on a handline – well, mission accomplished and here is a video of Tosh getting that sailfish on the handline. He also tells stories about growing up fishing in Costa Rica as well as sharing his passion for fishing with some stories about the exotic species he has landed to date.
We can’t wait to see what he catches next! This is Pura Vida at its finest!
