The longline industry generates around 70,000 jobs dedicated to the extraction, processing, distribution and export of marine resources (MIDEPLAN, MINAE, MAG and Agenda Azul, 2017). These resources depend on a healthy and bio-diverse ocean environment.

Paradoxically, these important resources have been poorly managed, which has caused its deterioration and in many cases, the collapse of important fisheries. As expected, fishing activity currently faces serious economic problems directly with declining catches and the very structure and operation of the sector.
Illegal and harmful fishing activities for the resource is used as a palliative alternative in the short term before the socioeconomic reality, which further complicates the availability of resource in the medium term and the future existence of potential sources of income.
