Silver Kings Reign Supreme on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast

Costa Rica Fishing News by FECOP August 26th, 2019 – As the recently released video above illustrates, the tarpon bite is catching its stride on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. While Costa Rica’s rainy season settles over much of the of the country, flat seas and high flying tarpon await anglers on the northern Caribbean coast. Few people know that Costa Rica’s Caribbean and Pacific have opposite seasons (rain vs no rain) throughout the calendar year which is great news for those seeking more diversity in target sport fishing species.

Although historical catch data for billfish ( sailfish and marlin) dips on the mid and South Pacific this time of year, tarpon and snook heat up in places like Tortuguero on the Caribbean. Local Captains like Eddie Brown (one of FECOPs featured local captains last October) are taking anglers out to battle some of the toughest fighting fish pound for pound in the world. Also called “Silver Kings” pulling a tarpon from the depths has been compared to dragging an old Chevy off the oceans bottom. And when they jump, get ready for a show (see video above) Even Olympic high jumpers would be envious of some of the heights these silvery giants are capable of reaching.

The possibility of  sea-to-plate dining is good as well due to the snook that lurk in the nearby river mouths and lagoons. Common snook and fat snook are just two of the handful of species that can be taken. As we all know, there is almost nothing to get ones mouth watering like a fresh snook filet on your plate. Snook is a sought after fish globally and with Costa Rica’s lush jungle river inlets as a backdrop, it just doesn’t get much better.

Combine Billfish, Snapper and Roosterfish with Tarpon and Snook for the Ultimate Fishing Trip

For years  savvy anglers have split there time between the Pacific for billfish/snapper/roosterfish and Caribbean for tarpon and snook making for an ultimate cross country fishing adventure.

One can realistically cross the country from the Pacific to the Caribbean in only three hours time, and even less with a small plane (45 minutes depending on which region of Costa Rica you’re flying out of.
