Huge Marlin Approximately 900lbs Released in Costa Rica

Sickafoos out of Garza, Costa Rica Releases Marlin Approximately 900lbs

Costa Rica is world famous as a destination for releasing marlin but a catch of this size is rare.

This past Monday a whole new meaning was given to hashtag #MarlinMonday when a huge marlin estimated at around 900lbs was released out of Garza, Costa Rica. An exact weight could not be taken because to get an accurate read the fish would have to be removed from the water and Costa Rica has very strict laws about leaving billfish in the water. Billfish in Costa Rica are valuable to the tourism economy and are strictly catch and release fish. The boat that released the fish was Sickafoos a charter out of Garza, Costa Rica in the the country’s North Pacific region. Costa Rica’s has long been known to offer fertile hunting grounds for blue, black and striped marlin, but Costa Rica’s marlin only average from 250 to 400 pounds (still very big fish) so this was an unusually large individual for the area. Marlin can be taken year round in Costa Rica but they peak in the Summer months of July-August and again in November-December. Garza is located in the Southern part of Guanacaste along the Southern Side of Nicoya. For more information about when and where to chase billfish in Costa Rica, check out Todd Staley’s article from Sport Fishing magazine A Billfish Angler’s Guide to Costa Rica.
