Giant Sailfish Released from Kayak Captured on Video

Gary Salazar releases a giant sailfish from his kayak while fishing only about a mile offshore

Costa Rica is renowned as a world class fishing destination and sailfish are one of the primary targets for anglers looking to enjoy an adrenaline filled day of fishing. But seeing a giant sailfish like this being released by a kayak only a mile offshore is not something you see every day. At first glance, we thought this fish looked like it may have been “enhanced” or photo-shopped because the fish looked abnormally large  – but once we saw who posted the photo we realized it was most likely the real deal. This big sailfish was caught by well known local kayak fisherman Gary Salazar. The video was captured by long time Costa Rica fishing veteran and Gary’s wing-man that day Lance Clinton. If you missed this spectacular video on our Facebook page, here it is below.

Costa Rica fishing was on fire this Fourth of July weekend as we received several reports of double digit sailfish raises, black marlin and this kayak release at only a mile offshore!

We contacted Gary Salazar about the catch and he said he caught the fish trolling with ballyhoo about a mile out with a Shimano Beastmaster rod, Penn Fierce III 6000 reel, and 50lb braid from a Hobie Kayak. He did not elaborate on the trolling method, but if you hire him as a guide, you can ask him yourself 🙂 The fight lasted about 30 minutes before the successful release. For Gary this is just another day at the office. We recommend you take a look at his Facebook and Instagram pages where you can see the amazing variety of sport fish this seasoned angler hooks up with on a daily basis.
